Sara Ferrer
So welcome, Tiffany, and thank you for joining us on Fearless and Flawed.
00:00:41:09 – 00:00:43:24
Tiffany Chapman
Thank you. I’m so happy to be here.
00:00:44:01 – 00:01:05:23
Sara Ferrer
So you are the, we’re excited to have you, naturally, but you are the maybe the second photographer we’ve we’ve talked to in this in slew of powerful women. But we find that everyone’s journey is so different, so dynamic. And it really breaks the idea that, oh, you know, you have the same career. The path might be the same.
00:01:05:23 – 00:01:16:22
Sara Ferrer
So. So tell us about Tiffany’s journey to photography. Were you born with a camera in your hand? How did we get here? To Tiffany Chapman Photography.
00:01:16:24 – 00:01:52:18
Tiffany Chapman
No, I love that. Actually, you know, I think that the first thing that really occurred was that my husband bought me my first camera. And that was almost 17 years ago. And it was film. I had no idea how to develop film. So I just took it somewhere to get it to go out, and it was really about me documenting, my children and just exploring with, you know, maybe some creative side of me that I didn’t really know about.
00:01:52:20 – 00:02:17:23
Tiffany Chapman
I was working full time writing to two boys. Husband was working full time and just kind of adjusting to, a recent move. We had moved from Virginia to Massachusetts. So I was just, you know, trying to fill in the gaps of, life, you know, and just making sure your, feeling good and and just staying passionate.
00:02:18:00 – 00:02:32:02
Sara Ferrer
And was this was this a hobby when you say you had the first the camera was bought 17 years ago. Was this like, here’s the camera girl. Go out and make that money or was it just like, hey, let’s have fun. What were you. Were you a stay at home mom? Were you taking care of the kids?
00:02:32:02 – 00:02:35:02
Sara Ferrer
What it would look like day to day life?
00:02:35:04 – 00:02:57:02
Tiffany Chapman
Sure. So, no, I worked full time. I was in, the IT field, and, you know, it really was not even a hobby where I would just even think about it was just. I would say I saw something that the boys were doing or, my sister and I are very close, so she can have her children over, that were close to my boys ages.
00:02:57:04 – 00:03:03:10
Tiffany Chapman
And just getting those particular moments and cannily pictures were really important to me back then.
00:03:03:12 – 00:03:07:00
Serena Reynolds
So how did you transition from itit photography?
00:03:07:02 – 00:03:40:02
Tiffany Chapman
It’s a little bit cosseted. So I guess I’ll dig down that little hole, so I then. Yeah, in, I started CrossFit. Okay. If you don’t know what CrossFit in is a cult and a good cult, a fitness, classes that involved, weight lifting, flipping tires, burpees. There’s all the all these really mental, mental things that you have to accomplish.
00:03:40:04 – 00:04:06:13
Tiffany Chapman
And I had some great, great friends, like, I literally had, like, nine women in my arsenal that were, like, just always cheering me on. I did competitions and meanwhile I was doing it, but I always had a camera. And I started taking pictures at CrossFit, and one of my friends was like, hey, one of my, teacher friends needs a second photographer for their wedding.
00:04:06:15 – 00:04:30:00
Tiffany Chapman
And I just kind of panicked. I was like, oh, I never I never photographed the wedding. Like, well, you’re not going to get paid for it. And I was like, oh, I didn’t expect to because I had no experience. Right. So that weekend I went out with two of my friends and their dog, and I took pictures everywhere I could just to kind of get myself, you know, together and and looked up stuff on YouTube and stuff.
00:04:30:00 – 00:04:52:18
Tiffany Chapman
So that’s kind of why I transitioned to, you know, knowing that I had some kind of, talent and that I could be a people person. So that first wedding, the couple really loved my pictures more than the first photographer. And I was like, I it made me like they reached out to me personally because they knew that I was new.
00:04:52:20 – 00:04:54:09
Tiffany Chapman
Just to say that.
00:04:54:11 – 00:05:21:09
Sara Ferrer
That was like the first experience of Tiffany, the, the professional, quote unquote photographer. Right. What I’m hearing is like, hey, there’s a little bit of nervousness, right? Your first gig, when you’re doing that, what is it? I guess what is it doing for you? I always wonder, you know, it’s it’s there’s a technical thing of, you know, snapping the photos, but what are you deriving from it?
00:05:21:09 – 00:05:33:03
Sara Ferrer
What are you getting out of it? That that you would say really drives it as a passion for something that you were dabbling in career wise or professionally?
00:05:33:05 – 00:06:05:03
Tiffany Chapman
It’s the memory creating, you know, we we as a society, you know, our, our digital world. And it you know, I come from a family of artists, my grandmother, my uncle, my my dad, my sister, all were painters. No one did photography though, so I always come at odd. But, you know, I feel like that that memory creating and, and being able to actually see those portraits again and again.
00:06:05:03 – 00:06:30:19
Tiffany Chapman
And so timeless and, important for you to keep, you know, those memories alive when people, you know, decide to, you know, go on their other journey of life. And, you know, I feel like that also, it comes from within you. I, I don’t think everyone could do it, to be honest. I, I, I probably had a little bit of imposter syndrome for sure.
00:06:30:21 – 00:06:55:16
Tiffany Chapman
That’s like because I was working full time. So for me, I’m super resourceful and I’ll kind of just go down this particular path. I feel like I need to learn more about this. I really like doing that, letting how can I, profit and and also just learn. So I found someone local, that was a budding photographer.
00:06:55:18 – 00:07:17:22
Tiffany Chapman
I typed a little Facebook messenger, post to her and a message. I said, I really love that picture you posted of a bouquet, a wedding bouquet. I’m interested in learning more about what you do. And she goes, are you sure you want to be a wedding photographer? She tried to talk me out of it without even meeting her.
00:07:17:24 – 00:07:34:03
Serena Reynolds
So. So you contacted a photographer? Not for course, but because you saw some need done and asked them to help you. I love that you hadn’t stumbled across the course or a program that was already free, predefined.
00:07:34:05 – 00:07:51:23
Tiffany Chapman
No, no. You know, Facebook back then, you know, that was ten years ago. It was I don’t want to say with new, but it’s it’s exciting. Just everyone was on it. And like, there’s so many to get to know people. And she literally met me for coffee and still tried to talk me out of it.
00:07:51:23 – 00:08:13:01
Tiffany Chapman
And then we just got we just clicked, and I’m telling you, she took some Mike and my pictures. I took some of hers. I did senior portraits with her. I, I knew she did weddings. Right. So I’m like, I was pretty bold. I was like, hey, I know you’re doing a wedding this weekend, but do you think I could just tag along?
00:08:13:01 – 00:08:31:06
Tiffany Chapman
You don’t have to pay me. I did that for like 3 or 4 weddings and she put me to work. But it was like it was that it was that knowledge that I needed to soak up to kind of be that fly on the wall that really propelled me to, like, really want to pursue what I was doing.
00:08:31:08 – 00:08:53:02
Serena Reynolds
But I have to say that’s a real go getter kind of attitude. I absolutely love that. So so, you know, I mean, a lot of us will look up a course program with spend hours on YouTube, but actually reach out and to say, look, I’ll do it for nothing. I just want to learn. And my kids need to learn to do this.
00:08:53:03 – 00:09:09:22
Sara Ferrer
Wow, that is super bold. And then what? What kind of came out that like 2 or 2 things, two things popped in my head while you’re talking about this, one is you kept mentioning that she you mentioned a couple times, she, she said, don’t do it. So I’m free. It’s a it’s like dating. She’s like, we shouldn’t date, we shouldn’t date.
00:09:09:22 – 00:09:29:20
Sara Ferrer
And then you’re like, but we’re gonna, And what what were the negatives or the things she was trying to talk you out of? And the second is, in those 3 or 4 weddings you did in the beginning, you know, as a kind of like an intern. If you will. In your experience, what what was it like?
00:09:29:20 – 00:09:35:14
Sara Ferrer
What did you realize? What was your takeaway after and during those weddings? Professionally?
00:09:35:16 – 00:09:43:00
Serena Reynolds
I’d really like to know. I won’t ask how old you were, but how many years ago was it?
00:09:43:02 – 00:09:44:20
Tiffany Chapman
That was ten years ago.
00:09:44:22 – 00:09:47:17
Serena Reynolds
So you weren’t in your 20s or.
00:09:47:19 – 00:10:09:12
Tiffany Chapman
No. So. Good. Good. Good point. That’s a really good point. Because she was 15 years younger than me. So she also was like, sure you want to do this. And that was one in the negative things like, weddings take a toll on your body. You got to deal with all the personality, guys. It’s a one deal shot.
00:10:09:12 – 00:10:31:23
Tiffany Chapman
Like, if you screw it up, it’s there. It’s. You can’t redo a wedding day. You know, all those things that are always, like, right here on your shoulder. And you’re you’re constantly, stressed. You don’t sit still. You might eat, and, drink some water. You know, you probably don’t go to the bathroom at all. You know, those are all the things that, like, she kind of be.
00:10:32:00 – 00:10:44:01
Tiffany Chapman
I was like, oh, that sounds like fun. You know? And then, you know, you’re, I’m sorry. Sorry. Your second part of your question. I’m completely blanking. No, no.
00:10:44:01 – 00:11:01:14
Sara Ferrer
YouTube link out, because I realize I throw ten questions at people and I go, can you answer them? So, let me retract all those crazy questions. The second one was what that was. It was okay, despite all this, you do this for your weddings. What’s the feeling? Why are you feeling like. Like, Holy shit, I’m going to quit my job.
00:11:01:14 – 00:11:08:12
Sara Ferrer
This is my calling. Are you thinking like, oh, it’s still very much a side gig. I have so much more to learn. Where are you at? Oh.
00:11:08:14 – 00:11:33:02
Tiffany Chapman
No. I wanted to go big, And I felt like because she was a small town photographer and God bless her, I wanted to do more weddings and mansions and, more elegant, classy, iconic. I grew up, with antiques. My my uncle was an antique dealer. He raised me up until I was 13 with my grandmother.
00:11:33:04 – 00:11:59:23
Tiffany Chapman
And I always had that kind of eclectic style. And it comes through and almost all of my portraits, I would say. But, you know, I, I will say I wanted to have more iconic, classy portraits. And she was really just kind of a shoot and burn a little bit. I hate to use that term, but I felt like she was just kind of stuck in her own little comfort zone, and I wanted to explore.
00:12:00:00 – 00:12:21:17
Tiffany Chapman
And so unfortunately, we kind of, you know, broke up. It was a it wasn’t relationship. We broke up, went different ways, but I went and found that I really loved weddings. And I love, love, and I loved, like, just this moment to be able to capture someone’s wedding day and that they can have for the rest of their lives.
00:12:21:17 – 00:12:48:09
Tiffany Chapman
You know, those memories through digital or prints or albums. So I decided to find, in person. Course. And I found someone out of Connecticut, did a carpet, walk through a wedding day, and they actually had models, and they were amazing. It was it completely. I did it 360. Like everything changed. I felt more confident.
00:12:48:11 – 00:13:05:08
Tiffany Chapman
I got a logo. I had someone helping me with, you know, my website. Where to start? Lightroom and Photoshop, all the things. So everything while I’m doing my IT job, I’m building this business on the side. Side hustle. Yeah.
00:13:05:10 – 00:13:16:14
Serena Reynolds
So I’m looking through your website. I’ve got it open here. And I mean, there is there’s an essence of, weddings. That’s not what you’re really doing now, is it?
00:13:16:16 – 00:13:41:05
Tiffany Chapman
No. So thank you for pointing that out. So I, you know, I will say up until 2020, I was hustling like weddings. I probably did 18 to 20 a year while working full time and also doing portraits, family portraits, senior sessions. And it just I got burnt out and a lot of it had to do with age.
00:13:41:07 – 00:14:07:09
Tiffany Chapman
I’m not that old, but I started to feel like, oh gosh, I’m having some health issues that are probably caused by this. And then in 2020, when the pandemic happened, all of this drama came in that no one was prepared for. And when I say drama, meaning the venues were canceling on my couples, the couples were using me as a therapist and not a photographer.
00:14:07:11 – 00:14:32:01
Tiffany Chapman
They were asking for money back that they had already given me. It just started to just feel like all of that passion that I was falling in love, had fallen in love with, was stripped away in one, one season. And the people that stayed with me that year are still, like, amazing friends. The others that kind of went in different directions.
00:14:32:03 – 00:14:58:10
Tiffany Chapman
Maybe my wedding couples, they I just they’re gone out of my life, and I’m fine with that because I’m not going to be for everybody. But I also had to use this word pivot, in 2020 and, realized that, like, oh, you know what? I’m really, really enjoying my portrait genre. And, I actually picked the portrait genre up in 2016.
00:14:58:10 – 00:15:23:20
Tiffany Chapman
So that was only two years after I started wedding. That, and I can tell you the story of how that happened. If that’s okay. Yeah, absolutely. Okay. Yeah. So another thing that I did to prepare myself is for a photographer was that I joined Facebook groups, and one of them was, called Boston Speakeasy. And, and it’s a photographer group.
00:15:23:23 – 00:15:46:12
Tiffany Chapman
And I’d met with several photographers and person. I got mentored by a couple of them. And again, I’m exploring outside of my hometown. Right. And wanted to go big. And I love that group. I, you know, you could you could almost write anything in there. We did like, photographer shoot outs where we would shoot each photograph each other.
00:15:46:14 – 00:16:12:24
Tiffany Chapman
Oh, I’m sorry to use that word, shoot out, but, photographing each other for free and have fun. There would be, photographer meetings and meet ups, and I would drive all the way to Boston to do that. And, and I just started really exploring what others were doing and posting and one particular running photographer was like, hey, I’m looking for an assistant, come in for an all day women empowerment portrait session.
00:16:12:24 – 00:16:35:20
Tiffany Chapman
And I was like, ooh, what is that? And so she was out in Danvers, which is, you know, quite a wild for me. And we started very early in the morning and ended that night. And she did, I believe, eight women, including myself, she photographed. They all had hair and makeup services. All were styled with jewelry and clothing.
00:16:35:22 – 00:16:55:06
Tiffany Chapman
And she literally did it in her living room that she cleared out. And it was it’s I still think back. It was so simple, which she did, but so classy. And I got my own hair and makeup done because I was her assistant. As my payment. And I’ve never when we start crying.
00:16:55:08 – 00:17:03:02
Sara Ferrer
We love we love a good tier on this podcast. Yes. Let it out, girl.
00:17:03:04 – 00:17:29:19
Tiffany Chapman
Some picture that I love to myself. And that was, out by 28, I think ten. And it just it it made me feel like I have to do this for someone else. It’s all right. Yeah. And I did, I, I soaked up all that. She told me she was like, follow this person, Sue Brice.
00:17:29:21 – 00:17:53:20
Tiffany Chapman
Get this. I can sell you one. Start in your living room. I did find a, studio to rent. I did, I, I did all the things, and I just, I swallowed it and just loved it, and I felt like it just needs so much joy to empower women through portraits because they are so, self-conscious.
00:17:53:20 – 00:18:10:20
Tiffany Chapman
We are, as I am, a woman here. We are so self-conscious of everything in our lives, right? Our bodies, how we perform at work, how we are as a mother or friend. It’s sister, all those things. So.
00:18:10:22 – 00:18:17:01
Serena Reynolds
But everyone on the podcast, me and Sarah are nodding here like some kind of. But yeah.
00:18:17:03 – 00:18:26:22
Sara Ferrer
Dog like way, like he is our cult leader or like, yes, yes leader. Everything. It is so really. And it’s it’s I don’t want to I don’t want to cut off your thought.
00:18:26:22 – 00:18:27:20
Tiffany Chapman
I just want to know. It’s okay.
00:18:27:22 – 00:18:45:15
Sara Ferrer
Sometimes it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable to express that. That is deep down inside how many of us feel right. But it’s not that convenient. We say is like, I may look okay, but I feel like shit, or I don’t like how I look in that. Well, I’m going to position myself in a certain way to make myself hate what what the outcome is less.
00:18:45:17 – 00:18:59:05
Sara Ferrer
And so thank you for being honest about your own journey because we’re it’s very rare that we’re ever alone. The experience usually shared. It’s just who’s willing to put it forward.
00:18:59:07 – 00:19:14:02
Serena Reynolds
I, I personally can ever find I don’t like photographs. I joked few years ago that if something happened to me, my children wouldn’t know who I was. Because there’s no photos of me. I just love them, I delete them, I move on.
00:19:14:02 – 00:19:24:07
Tiffany Chapman
And so that was one of my one of my kind of, I would say, catchphrases is, what will your children find when you are gone?
00:19:24:09 – 00:19:30:11
Serena Reynolds
Have you lots of photos of them? And my husband? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:19:30:11 – 00:19:35:13
Tiffany Chapman
So, I think you should fly to Massachusetts and let me photograph you.
00:19:35:15 – 00:20:00:20
Serena Reynolds
I think that’s a fabulous idea, because there’s one thing. There’s one thing on your website that, like, really grabbed me. I mean, your your portraits are beautiful, okay? And I recommend people come and have a look. Tiffany Chapman photography.com. They it will be on the website as well. They listen for the website, but they’re not these these women are not young that but they’re beautiful.
00:20:00:20 – 00:20:36:02
Serena Reynolds
And you’ve really, like, pulled out colors on them and and I mean, you’re not just women but all beautiful. You know, they’re not models, but they all look as special as as a model word. And you’ve got one line under your 50 plus and fab, which I absolutely love. And it’s see you and I that like gives me goosebumps because that’s, that’s just, just so lovely that it’s just exactly if I to get a photographer to get some photos from that’s that’s where I want to go.
00:20:36:03 – 00:20:40:02
Serena Reynolds
That’s this is you can thank you on the nail, on the head.
00:20:40:04 – 00:21:12:19
Tiffany Chapman
I feel it’s my superpower. Every woman has one, regardless of the minute or not. My superpower is, connection and making some uncomfortable. I literally can do it in 30 minutes. I offer many sessions for headshots, and people are like, how to. I hate my picture taken. Why do these look good? I mean, I’m, like, planning myself on the back right now, but I feel like that is one of my strongest traits that I bring to my portrait genre.
00:21:12:21 – 00:21:37:07
Tiffany Chapman
And that that 15 fabulous project that we’re speaking about, that was, passion project that I, I can’t I, I’m not going to get emotional about it, but it has been the most rewarding project I’ve ever kicked off. I’ve done the beauty project, beauty model project. I’ve done a couple of, 40 over 40 and fabulous 40.
00:21:37:07 – 00:22:06:10
Tiffany Chapman
And. Yeah, I think that’s one I can’t remember. Sorry, but, but the women in that particular demographic, including myself, really are out underneath the rock and just don’t on a feel good about themselves because they are going through the menopause. They’re going through maybe divorce, maybe they’re maybe their children left their house and they have no idea what to do with themselves.
00:22:06:12 – 00:22:39:15
Tiffany Chapman
Maybe they’re changing careers, you know? And they just need to be celebrated. I can’t express it enough. And it’s so difficult sometimes to, like, explain that to a potential client until you’re actually in my studio space, getting pampered with hair and makeup services and just getting to know me and, like, listening to music and just vibing with what I can give you, it’s I want to bottle it up and just, like, sell it on it.
00:22:39:17 – 00:22:56:15
Serena Reynolds
So. So what is the process for if somebody was to come to you for, for their portrait? I mean, I mean, I’d really recommend people to come and have a look for a portraits. What what’s the process? What what is it that you do? How how does that day look like?
00:22:56:17 – 00:23:04:04
Tiffany Chapman
It I will say first, it’s an experience, that you will not ever regret doing.
00:23:04:06 – 00:23:07:05
Serena Reynolds
Is a great gift for men to give to their wives.
00:23:07:07 – 00:23:27:00
Tiffany Chapman
Yes. Most definitely. And then this happened several times. And it’s. I had one little red flag happen one time where the guy was, like, messaging me, and I was like, this sounds like a scam, you know, like the way he was typing it. And I was like, kind of leery and like standing up a little bit from it.
00:23:27:00 – 00:23:50:22
Tiffany Chapman
And he’s like, no, no, no, don’t worry. I’m a police officer and I know that you’re being cautious and I appreciate you kind of, you know, asking me simple questions and wanting to meet in a public place so we can exchange money. Anyway, it turned out that was, that that was the most beautiful project I did to actually one of the women in that project.
00:23:50:22 – 00:24:17:05
Tiffany Chapman
So, you know, for me, I asked for people to apply for this particular project. And I’ve done it for two years now. I’m wrapping it up now. But when they do that, we get on a consult call and we talk about what the experience will involve. And a lot of women don’t know what to wear. They, they, you know, I think the pandemic did not help things out.
00:24:17:10 – 00:24:19:15
Tiffany Chapman
We’re all in yoga pants and sweatshirts.
00:24:19:17 – 00:24:22:05
Serena Reynolds
And gone there and do the, like.
00:24:22:07 – 00:24:22:19
Tiffany Chapman
I.
00:24:22:20 – 00:24:43:05
Sara Ferrer
Before our call, I do a little leg lift over zoom, and I was like, your girls need you on my phone. Well, not to say pods. Look, I’m hanging around you to do too much during my part, I would literally. The more hang around Serena, the more I feel like I am the queen here. Okay, but yes, I have on my pajama pants.
00:24:43:07 – 00:25:11:07
Tiffany Chapman
Yeah, it is what it is, so I’ll help. I, I love fashion, I love clothing, I love being able to help someone step into their comfort zone or out of their comfort zone. So in addition to the wardrobe and styling consultation that I give you, you have access to my studio clothing. So that was one of the things that my business manager pulled me on, but I didn’t anyway, I bought a lot.
00:25:11:07 – 00:25:40:02
Tiffany Chapman
I bought a lot of gowns that you would never have in your closet. Or if you did, you only want one. And I have some, you know, I would say, like, really sexy stuff, but you could make it look more professional. Have a good mix. Sizes and styles. And I really invest a lot of money in that, because I felt like not everyone had clothing to bring.
00:25:40:02 – 00:26:06:06
Tiffany Chapman
And, you know, I’ve kind of shifted from that to what? We can talk about that another time about about keeping your cost of goods down is that was a bad that was a lesson learned that I will I can’t remember the last time I bought anything for the studio. Seriously, it’s been a couple of years. So including that wardrobe and styling consultation, we do that through zoom or in person, which is so fun because I bring them into my studio and they try on clothes.
00:26:06:06 – 00:26:32:17
Tiffany Chapman
I’m like your best friend and I’m wardrobe room, you know, PJ Max or Armor Marshalls or wherever you want to shop. And I will be brutally honest. Nice. I’ll be nice. But, like, that color washes you out. That sizing makes you look bigger than you are. Let’s try to cinch things. I know that you want everything to be loose because you have the bumps that you don’t like about yourself.
00:26:32:19 – 00:26:53:04
Tiffany Chapman
I don’t care, I’m not Photoshop. I’ll pose you the way you want, and make you look really beautiful. More beautiful than you really are. And then after that, about two weeks later, we do your portrait session where you come in for professional hair and makeup. I have about 4 to 5 artists that I recycle through.
00:26:53:06 – 00:27:14:06
Tiffany Chapman
And honestly, they don’t make you not look like yourself. We’re very, conscious of what people like and what they don’t like. And where we asking right afterwards. Honesty’s the best. We’ve only had it maybe two times in my ten years that someone’s been like, not like any of us. So that’s not my artist or me.
00:27:14:06 – 00:27:37:00
Tiffany Chapman
That’s, Right. And then we go through the portrait session, and then afterwards we do about a week later, we do either a in-person or a zoom consultation, and we review your portraits together. And my biggest tagline is, only buy what you love. There’s no obligation to be stuck in a cookie cutter. But, you know, we play music.
00:27:37:00 – 00:27:57:01
Tiffany Chapman
If they want bubbly, they’re. We can do that. I provide, like, snacks. It’s really fun. Sometimes my artist will stay behind and we’ll do behind the scenes. Yeah. That’s cool, I love it. I, I thrive on it. So the 15 fabulous is one of those projects that I do that or I also do that for personal branding.
00:27:57:03 – 00:28:14:01
Tiffany Chapman
That can be for a small business, that can be for a larger business and that’s, you know, really encompassed around your vision for your brand and how you want your brand to be seen. I’m Italian, so I talk with my hands. I’m sorry, never express.
00:28:14:02 – 00:28:35:07
Sara Ferrer
I’m it sounds like while we’re listening to this process one, it sounds like a really well thought out process, that the more you talk about, the more and I see Serena’s head nodding yes, as well as mine, where it’s like, yes, fashion and hair and it feels like me. Well, the best type girl time you’ve got. Like your bestie, they’re wanting the best for you.
00:28:35:07 – 00:28:57:09
Sara Ferrer
So it sounds like you have really figured out this process. But I know that we spoke about beginning of Covid is when, you know, some things started to shift gears. So I just want to take it back because are you you’re doing this full time now? I, I’m yeah. You left the it behind. Can you talk about, you know, leaving it behind and having this be full time.
00:28:57:09 – 00:29:13:23
Sara Ferrer
You have a great process. But you also mentioned like, hey, there are some things business wise, looking back, we I wouldn’t have done so much talk through that. What are some of those like, I thought it was a good idea five years ago. Now I’m thinking about it. Kind of a waste of money.
00:29:13:24 – 00:29:35:19
Tiffany Chapman
Yeah, yeah, I went in with my heart. I didn’t go on with my brain. Which is very typical in small businesses. Right. We’re not. And I think women too, are really shy about asking for help. When it comes to owning your own business, we get very intimidated by it, and. Oh, I can handle this. I can handle this.
00:29:35:21 – 00:29:59:17
Tiffany Chapman
And I think for me, back in 2020, you know, we went through that pandemic and I got laid off from my IT job in March, and I’m sorry I got put on furlough, as they call it. And I was like, oh, they’ll bring me back. It’s fine, it’s fine. And then in July, they let me go after 19, almost 20 years of it work at that particular company.
00:29:59:17 – 00:30:30:19
Tiffany Chapman
And they laid off 1100 people. So I didn’t feel like I was like being targeted. But wow was like ego. It was an ouch. It my ego, I mean, I cried for a long time this because I never went to school for it. I literally am a sponge. And I think that’s why I’m, I’m, I’ve succeeded at photography because when I’m like something, I’m going to dive headfirst and learn all I can.
00:30:30:21 – 00:30:53:05
Tiffany Chapman
And that was my you know, I felt at that point, my, my boss’s boss told me I came out of this office, my husband was in the kitchen, and I go, and they let me go. And he’s like, now you can do your dream job, and I will. I’m going to be honest, lady, he is. He always thought my job, photography was a hobby.
00:30:53:07 – 00:31:18:03
Tiffany Chapman
I was making good money. As at the hobby. So for him to, like, be supportive, all of a sudden, I was like, all right, I can do this. So I had his backing and, you know, I really needed the mentorship in my life to see where I could go with doing it full time. And so I latched on to a whole bunch of people in the same industry.
00:31:18:05 – 00:31:34:15
Tiffany Chapman
Just in the last year, I got a business manager. I’m sorry, this is coach. She’s changed my life. I wish that I had her five years ago. I wish that I had her ten years ago. To be honest, I think it’s her name.
00:31:34:15 – 00:31:40:01
Sara Ferrer
Don’t gatekeeper it it’s. Oh, yeah. Yes. We want. Yeah yeah yeah, yeah.
00:31:40:03 – 00:32:03:17
Tiffany Chapman
Oh, my God, she’s amazing. Her name is Judy. Cast person. She’s out of West Hartford, Connecticut. She was one of my 15 fabulous clients, and we were just. I she is literally been not just like a, like, she’s all business, but she’s also, like, very personal. And I needed that person. I didn’t need someone who was going to be very bad.
00:32:03:17 – 00:32:26:17
Tiffany Chapman
Jen mended. But I needed someone who was going to give me tough love and and really, shift my mindset. It’s not going to change in a year. I that’s the first step. Your mind is not going to change in a year after not doing well with, handling my money, paid my taxes, my cost of goods.
00:32:26:19 – 00:32:50:17
Tiffany Chapman
What what makes sense to, like, invest in. Should you buy all the courses? You know, your equipment, you know, are you investing in equipment? Can you limp along a little bit longer? Because photography is not cheap. And it’s technology. Technology doesn’t last forever. So you’re looking at between 3 and 5 years of replacing your equipment.
00:32:50:19 – 00:33:01:18
Tiffany Chapman
You also get bored. And as a creative artist, you get bored. So I have started a new passion project.
00:33:01:20 – 00:33:06:03
Serena Reynolds
Here we go. Next shiny object.
00:33:06:05 – 00:33:10:11
Tiffany Chapman
So I’m doing boudoir. Are you ladies familiar with that?
00:33:10:13 – 00:33:11:14
Serena Reynolds
I’m not.
00:33:11:16 – 00:33:12:09
Tiffany Chapman
You’re not?
00:33:12:15 – 00:33:14:20
Serena Reynolds
I’m not.
00:33:14:22 – 00:33:34:12
Tiffany Chapman
So there’s a lot of different styles of boudoir. But boudoir is when women are. And it can be men now, too. Are inland gray, and they’re in, musicians that. I don’t want to say. It’s pornographic. Oh.
00:33:34:14 – 00:33:35:17
Sara Ferrer
There’s borderline.
00:33:35:19 – 00:34:00:14
Tiffany Chapman
Borderline sexy. Thank you. Okay. But there’s borderline, photographers out there that, you know, kind of really push the edge, which is fine. But that’s not for me. As you probably heard, I’m very, art forward or forward thinking for art I love. I want it to be iconic, tasteful and classy, making people feel sexy.
00:34:00:16 – 00:34:23:04
Tiffany Chapman
Yeah. And I saw some men have so much of that to in the 50s and fabulous. Like, there were women that were wanting to put lingerie on, even though they came in with clothes, they wanted to feel sexy. And I was like, and I’ve done that boudoir genre on and off the last ten years that I really wanted to build my portfolio for it.
00:34:23:06 – 00:34:25:23
Serena Reynolds
So it’s not on your website yet?
00:34:25:24 – 00:34:56:02
Tiffany Chapman
No, no. So that means, I’m building the portfolio right now. And I also was like, you know, I don’t stick yourself. I’m going to say this as to any of the business owners out there, don’t stick yourself in a silo just because you’re really good at one thing. Keep exploring. Like you may. You might find that that option B is really where you want to be, but you have to try it first.
00:34:56:05 – 00:35:01:07
Tiffany Chapman
Like don’t be afraid to put your toe in the water.
00:35:01:09 – 00:35:19:01
Sara Ferrer
I’m loving the. I have seen actually, a couple of, like, boudoir shots here. And I always find that, like, it pops up around, like, Valentine’s Day is like, kind of like. Like what? To get, like, you know, hey, I’ve been married or dating for 20 years. Ten years. Five. Or even if it’s like, young new love, which is even more exciting, right?
00:35:19:01 – 00:35:33:01
Sara Ferrer
So do you find that that tends to be if someone says, well, when would I do this? Is it tend to be more around like a birthday or a holiday? Or do you find that this is just, hey, I need a real boost. This is something I would, you know, look into.
00:35:33:03 – 00:35:57:17
Tiffany Chapman
Before it was, my brides that wanted to give an album to their future husband. Cute. Yeah, I think so. And the other piece is, I’m turning 30. I’m turning 40. I’m turning 30. I’m on to celebrate myself. You know, I, I’ve seen people really come out of their comfort zone with this genre. I have a really great friend, Michelle.
00:35:57:17 – 00:36:22:18
Tiffany Chapman
Ashley. She’s insanely talented boudoir photographer. And, Worcester, Boston area. And, you know, I’ve always been kind of, you know, I had to, to try this genre. And she’s been my biggest cheerleader because that’s all she got. She is just she is right into just doing that. And I, she was actually one of my mentors, I forgot to tell you that.
00:36:22:20 – 00:36:29:17
Tiffany Chapman
So she helped me with my business growth. She took pictures of me, not boudoir.
00:36:29:19 – 00:36:32:01
Sara Ferrer
Not yet, not yet not.
00:36:32:03 – 00:37:00:07
Tiffany Chapman
Yeah, but you know what? Yeah, right. I know, she was a budding photographer out of that Boston speakeasy. I think. And we just. We connected, so I can’t say enough about that particular group. It, it really changed my life and my business. It does help define your people in your community. And if a group isn’t good for you, you know, like, it’s not serving you.
00:37:00:09 – 00:37:01:02
Tiffany Chapman
Yeah, that’s.
00:37:01:02 – 00:37:06:11
Serena Reynolds
My motto in life. If it’s not serving me, get out without it.
00:37:06:12 – 00:37:30:18
Sara Ferrer
What? You would look kind of looking back on the journey. It sounds like you now, where you’re in it, you’re reinventing yourself as a photographer. You’re allowing yourself to explore, knowing where you are now and having the idea of kind of what the future may hold for Tiffany Chapman Photography. What what would you say to Tiffany ten years ago?
00:37:30:18 – 00:37:37:13
Sara Ferrer
No. Excuse me, 17 years ago, she first got that camera and it was just, like you said, a hobby.
00:37:37:15 – 00:37:38:17
Serena Reynolds
What would you.
00:37:38:19 – 00:37:45:11
Sara Ferrer
What would you say to her about this? This camera, this hobby, this potential career? What advice would you give her?
00:37:45:13 – 00:37:46:18
Tiffany Chapman
You can do anything.
00:37:46:20 – 00:37:47:09
Serena Reynolds
00:37:47:11 – 00:37:51:21
Tiffany Chapman
Don’t doubt yourself. You’re not a fraud.
00:37:51:23 – 00:37:54:24
Sara Ferrer
Oh, I love them.
00:37:55:01 – 00:38:09:13
Tiffany Chapman
Yeah. It’s really imposter syndrome. Terrible. It’s terrible. And, and I think creative artists have it more than most because we want to be perfectionists.
00:38:09:15 – 00:38:16:19
Serena Reynolds
And when people criticize that criticizing something that is from inside,
00:38:16:21 – 00:38:51:17
Tiffany Chapman
It’s really funny. You know, I never thought of myself as an artist until I started feeling that confidence. So I will tell you that imposter syndrome goes hand in hand with being unconfident. Right? So, failure’s not an option. You just you keep going. And that’s one thing that I didn’t have someone telling me that I had mentors, but I always felt like because I was working it as my, full time job, I was hiding my job, my my photography from my job, too.
00:38:51:19 – 00:39:04:21
Tiffany Chapman
So that was challenging, that I hid that for, I think, eight years. And I told my boss when I got let go, I was like, oh, I’ll be fine. I have my own business. She’s like, what?
00:39:04:23 – 00:39:15:23
Sara Ferrer
Why did you hide it? Just out of curiosity, was it like very like, not cool to have like a side gig? Was the implication that you weren’t doing your job thoroughly? Yeah, that’s exactly it.
00:39:16:00 – 00:39:18:24
Tiffany Chapman
I worked with a lot of men. Egotistical men.
00:39:19:05 – 00:39:23:06
Serena Reynolds
I was going to ask you that. I come to see you.
00:39:23:06 – 00:39:41:10
Tiffany Chapman
Do? Yeah. And I went through a few really horrible bosses. The last boss I had, I probably I almost told her one time because we were drinking wine and we were having a really good time, and we were the same age, and I loved her, but I was like, no, no, no, no, no, not going to do it.
00:39:41:10 – 00:40:05:08
Tiffany Chapman
And I going to take this relationship not her business. It’s not interfering with my day to day work. But I’ll be really honest, it was because I was doing like eight hours a night and eight hours editing and photography. You know, I was the weekend warrior for weddings and then, doing the portraits on the weekends. And I had the flexibility that I have now.
00:40:05:10 – 00:40:34:11
Tiffany Chapman
It’s it’s really great. I will say this year has been one of my harder years, though, for, for the economy, for people this kind of not coming forward for small business content creating seems to be a little less. And that’s really where my, my 20, 22, 23 years were. There were so many small businesses opening and they all needed to be seen.
00:40:34:16 – 00:40:56:17
Serena Reynolds
Yeah, we all talk about the pandemic being a pivot point. Everyone we speak to us, ourselves are exactly the same. It was a pivot point, but what? But we were all so this is a strange word to use. I mean, you got made redundant and you were in tears, but it led to your passion project and and then your career.
00:40:56:19 – 00:41:26:11
Serena Reynolds
But for many of us, it wasn’t the pandemic that was the problem. We were all kind of cushioned in the pandemic. There was furlough money. There was, support, there was help. Everyone was going through it. It’s now after it’s it’s five years from 2020. We’re about to hit 2025. All our economies are actually flatlining desperately. Small businesses are really suffering.
00:41:26:13 – 00:41:49:20
Serena Reynolds
Governments are making. Strange and and big moves to try and move stuff forward. I don’t know where I’m going with this. But it’s now it’s now that we’re really affected. Small businesses are really being impacted. It’s feeding down the inflation in shops, you know.
00:41:49:22 – 00:42:09:07
Tiffany Chapman
Yeah I yeah. And that is so funny. I have I have a really great ambassador. I’ve many of them of my brand which is really helped me. I will say that that’s one word of advice I can give to someone. Find an ambassador of your brand. They will be seeing you from their rooftops.
00:42:09:09 – 00:42:12:22
Serena Reynolds
I have one, and then Zara.
00:42:12:24 – 00:42:32:20
Sara Ferrer
We’ve got a girl, okay? I’m giving you her the heart. I’m giving her the heart. That is true, I gastro. You can go. Yeah. And. And I tell everyone about Serena, and then I’m like, girl, this is easy work, I love you, I think you’re great. So, ambassador, this is just called I love representing goodness. So it goes to when people say, think you weren’t lying.
00:42:32:20 – 00:42:50:21
Sara Ferrer
She’s the real deal. And you say to me all the time, oh, you, you know, you’re so good at just like letting people know I exist. Well, how can you keep it in box greatness? Like like I want to be around greatness. And it sounds Tiffany like you’ve understood to that. Like being out there. You putting yourself out there to be with people you aspire to be.
00:42:50:21 – 00:42:57:21
Sara Ferrer
It doesn’t hold anybody. In fact, it allows people to go further together than they would alone. Right?
00:42:57:23 – 00:42:59:04
Tiffany Chapman
Yes. We’re doing.
00:42:59:04 – 00:43:00:04
Serena Reynolds
Here.
00:43:00:06 – 00:43:01:19
Tiffany Chapman
Yeah, we just did.
00:43:01:19 – 00:43:03:22
Serena Reynolds
We want to pay it forward.
00:43:03:24 – 00:43:23:23
Tiffany Chapman
Right? I love that, I love that and I, you know, just to touch base on that economy, I’m in so many photography groups and, you know, some serve me and some don’t. But all across the board, especially photographers are hurting. You know, I don’t want to say it’s I, I say it’s just the economy in general.
00:43:24:00 – 00:44:06:18
Tiffany Chapman
And I also could be someone could just be like, you’re you’re lying, Tiff, I’ve had an amazing year. Well, okay. But every every state’s different. Every, population, you know, where we are is different and what they’re medium. I guess what I’m trying to say, the medium is different in every place I am. I actually was told that my household medium was more than where my mentor, who’s making like three, you know, half $1 million, then, you know, I mean, so she’s like, if I can do it in a medium that’s only 50,000 a year and you’re at 80,000 a year, you know, and I’ll make it happen.
00:44:06:18 – 00:44:12:01
Tiffany Chapman
So there’s a, there’s kind of that what do they call that? Smoke and mirrors come out right.
00:44:12:03 – 00:44:14:02
Sara Ferrer
They’re like, yeah, Cher, I don’t.
00:44:14:02 – 00:44:37:21
Tiffany Chapman
Believe you. But then I implemented some of what she’s told me. And it’s really worked. So it is like I tell you, you have to stick your toe in to see if it’s going to work, but doesn’t. So be it. Move on. And with that being said, the Academy has pushed me to actually try to find a supplemental income, and just no safety net, really.
00:44:37:21 – 00:45:07:00
Tiffany Chapman
I mean, I mean, think about it. I for from the, from the age of 18 had a steady paycheck. I don’t have any small business owners in my family. I had no idea what to do. So I didn’t have a savings. I used all my furlough money. I got unemployment at one point and and I’m like, I’m 56, 36, okay, I don’t have a retirement.
00:45:07:02 – 00:45:31:17
Tiffany Chapman
It’s terrifying. It’s absolutely terrifying. So I know from my business coach and her just pushing me maybe to if you need to flip flop, maybe you need to go back to a full time job, get that steady paycheck and still do your part. Your photography. Don’t click that. But now that it’s a smooth sailing ship, you can do a lot more with what you’ve got.
00:45:31:21 – 00:45:59:01
Tiffany Chapman
You can up your prices. Maybe. Maybe you can be a little more selective about who you’re choosing to photograph. But that supplement income will fuel my retirement. It’ll pay down some debt. Maybe I can pay off the house. So. So I’m in this late, weird transition time right now. Ladies, I know you want to talk to me about my photography and all that, but I also think it’s important for people to know that, like, I’m.
00:45:59:01 – 00:46:04:02
Tiffany Chapman
I’m transitioning into a different journey. I think in the next year.
00:46:04:04 – 00:46:33:12
Serena Reynolds
Yeah. No, I absolutely this is exactly what we want to talk about. The transition from Chrysalis the butterfly. And now I I’m transitioning there is transitioning definitely. We’re going through this journey as well. I like the fact that I’m talking on a podcast. This is absolutely hilarious. If you know me, it’s not. This is I’m not a front front person at all.
00:46:33:12 – 00:46:43:01
Serena Reynolds
I said it a thousand times. I like to be behind the the the people, not to be the people, if that makes sense. Yeah.
00:46:43:03 – 00:46:55:09
Tiffany Chapman
Yeah, it’s definitely, so I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do. I love thing, it’s like there’s all these balls in the air and I’m like, which one’s gonna land right here?
00:46:55:11 – 00:46:59:12
Serena Reynolds
Okay, so boudoir photographer. What else is in that bag of tricks?
00:46:59:14 – 00:47:30:23
Tiffany Chapman
I I’m dabbling with the thought because someone, two people have reached out to me to do a little one on one mentoring. Because I feel I can’t express enough. If someone had asked me, what’s the one thing that you can recommend to someone who’s just starting out? And I would say, find yourself a mentor and don’t have just one, keep transitioning to other ones, because everyone’s going to give you a little bit of like a puzzle piece, right?
00:47:31:00 – 00:47:52:15
Tiffany Chapman
And I did. I probably have ten under my belt at one point, you know, everyone’s going to give you like, it’s either going to be about self-confidence, self-esteem or, how wonderful. You are as a, you know, all those things, but also the business side, like the tech side, like, oh my God, I don’t know how to do that in Photoshop.
00:47:52:17 – 00:48:20:24
Tiffany Chapman
Can you help me? You know, oh, you found the editor that can do all your retouching. Let me know I that’s one thing I transitioned out I love it. And it’s delegation, you know, making sure that what isn’t again serving you delegate out because it’s. That was absorbing my brain like I would spent hours editing and I can do it all.
00:48:20:24 – 00:48:46:15
Tiffany Chapman
Like, as a small business owner. So entrepreneur, you are wearing the marketing hat, the counting hat, the editing hat, the personality hat, the, you know, cost, you know, all those things. So I think that it’s really important for you to have that mentorship under your belt. I know that’s not answering your questions right now. These are to.
00:48:46:17 – 00:49:06:04
Sara Ferrer
Me, you’re giving us more than answers. You’re giving us gems like like you realize to like, even when you mentioned earlier about, you know, oh, it doesn’t really relate to business. Of course it relates to business. This is how can we separate? I think there’s a balance. The who we are professionally can be vastly different than who we are personally.
00:49:06:09 – 00:49:25:17
Sara Ferrer
And I would even I would even go further and say that’s the expectation someone has. Then you’re going to be really disappointed that you can’t leave, you know, home problems or business problems at the door. I mean, we have to learn how to manage them, right? But part of what makes you so unique is that you have a real experience.
00:49:25:17 – 00:49:47:18
Sara Ferrer
Once you looked at a photo and said, you know, it’s the first time I felt beautiful, so you know how it feels on the opposite end of the camera, right? Like during I really celebrate talking about those human moments as opposed to talking to, you know, business women who go, wow, I have it all figured out. Well, if you have it all figured out, you’re going to be a really shit conversation.
00:49:47:19 – 00:50:03:15
Tiffany Chapman
I don’t have it figured out. And I stepped away from weddings and I do intimate weddings. Only now I become the head shot queen. Supposedly when you type in headshots near me, I’m getting everyone going.
00:50:03:15 – 00:50:06:19
Serena Reynolds
Redundant needs a new headshot. But it’s true.
00:50:06:21 – 00:50:33:15
Tiffany Chapman
It’s true. It’s a good. It’s a good. Like me. It’s just a secure niche. Thank you. Security blanket. But again, like, I love the personal branding. I love maternity, I do maternity, I do families. This year I explored doing a little bit of, mini sessions for families, and I cringed, because I, I realized I’ll be really transparent.
00:50:33:15 – 00:50:55:22
Tiffany Chapman
I realized the money that I made on those minis, and all the time I invested, I could have done that in a four hour shoot. Yep. Completely. So sometimes, like I said, you have to you have to learn those lessons a little harder to just move forward and grow more. Totally. So there’s nothing.
00:50:55:22 – 00:51:19:22
Sara Ferrer
Wrong with that. I love it when it’s like, how do you know until you know, like if people you’re passionate sometimes the passion don’t pay the bills. You know, it’s like, I need passion and still make it make sense in my, you know, my PNL and my checkbook, if you will. So yeah, they were for being transparent and and as we’re actually that we’re, we’re kind of nearing somewhat of the end of this, of this beautiful story.
00:51:19:22 – 00:51:49:04
Sara Ferrer
But I want to I don’t want to forget, a little tradition we have on this podcast of we always ask the interviewee before you, we always ask for a question that they can ask to the next guest. And, we always try to say, hey, it doesn’t have to be super like deep, but just anything. And Ashley Mason was our, our last interviewee, and she had a great question for you.
00:51:49:04 – 00:52:01:05
Sara Ferrer
And it was, what are you reading? What book are you reading? She’s an avid book reader. Oh, leads. Yeah. Okay. What? Let us know.
00:52:01:07 – 00:52:34:24
Tiffany Chapman
It’s by Kristin Hannah. It’s called Summer House. Kristin Hannah wrote recently the women, which was really, really good. It was based on, true story a love if it’s not fiction, about, Vietnam nurses, E.R. nurses. And in the actual, like, in the tent, doing surgeries, helping with all the surgeons and same book. Like I highly recommend that book was such a good read, but I love Kristin.
00:52:34:24 – 00:52:56:08
Tiffany Chapman
Hannah. It’s called the Summer House. I just I just did that one. The other one that I just want to say The housemaid is insane. I can’t remember who that’s written by that I’m avid. Like, I read two books. I just went to Florida this past weekend and I read two books in two days.
00:52:56:10 – 00:52:58:15
Sara Ferrer
Have a great. These sound. That’s awesome.
00:52:58:17 – 00:53:17:02
Tiffany Chapman
Yeah. And but that’s what really like that gets the noise out of my head. I need to sometimes just get off of social media, get off my website, get off email, and just, like, absorb myself into some book that’s going to take me somewhere else.
00:53:17:04 – 00:53:36:07
Sara Ferrer
I love that and predations. I mean, it’s it sounds like I’m always intrigued by what, like creatives are reading, right? Because I find that, like, you probably have a very active. Right? So usually whenever I’ve been recommended a book by a creative, I am not disappointed. It’s like, yes, this is good, this is visual. There’s twists and turns.
00:53:36:07 – 00:53:49:15
Sara Ferrer
My yeah. Oh, and then I get recommended a book by someone who’s a bit more, you know, straight edge if you will. Noncreative. And I’m like, I don’t need another book about the psychology of people. Okay, let’s.
00:53:49:17 – 00:53:50:06
Tiffany Chapman
I have.
00:53:50:10 – 00:54:01:11
Sara Ferrer
My book. Sarah, I recommend Carina. You recommended your book to me, a thousand. And I know that’s your logical brain. Give me more of the creative brain, girl.
00:54:01:13 – 00:54:06:23
Serena Reynolds
You know, I use the creative day all day long.
00:54:07:00 – 00:54:12:14
Tiffany Chapman
Am I? I’m also. I need the actual book. I can’t listen to audio because my brain will just be like.
00:54:12:16 – 00:54:33:03
Sara Ferrer
I hear the feel of the texture of it. So so so those are great recommendations. Thank you. I have written those down. I’m reading before Women Had Wings, right now, which is like it was like an Oprah favorite, like, I don’t know, 15 years ago. So I’m just I’m just catching up to like, Oprah’s favorites. I’m like 15 years behind, but I’ll make it there.
00:54:33:05 – 00:54:55:09
Sara Ferrer
But what do you want to ask? What do you giving up for our next, guest? What question does Tiffany Chapman want to throw out there? It can be as as simple as what are you reading to? As deep as you want to get. This is the only question we do. We don’t tell our guests beforehand because we like the spontaneity, if you will.
00:54:55:11 – 00:54:59:02
Sara Ferrer
Oh.
00:54:59:04 – 00:55:13:01
Tiffany Chapman
If you could go back in time and change one thing about you or your or your path, what would it be? Change.
00:55:13:03 – 00:55:34:08
Sara Ferrer
Thank you. I we have to write this down because Serena and I have a beautiful habit of being so engaged. That neck in next interview. We’re like. And ways and then we’re like, oh, crap. Like, do you remember what it was? I think we don’t. And then we for two minutes, we Serena and I do our little cute thing of like, oh, this is what happens when you get engaged.
00:55:34:13 – 00:55:44:10
Sara Ferrer
Okay. So I love that question. If you could go back in the time what? And change one thing about your business or whatever.
00:55:44:12 – 00:55:47:08
Tiffany Chapman
You know, personal, personal or business. Yeah.
00:55:47:10 – 00:55:49:08
Sara Ferrer
Personal purpose, what would it be?
00:55:49:10 – 00:55:53:07
Tiffany Chapman
But that question can take you on so many different trajectories, right.
00:55:53:09 – 00:56:19:09
Sara Ferrer
Absolutely love that. And Tiffany it it’s in in really a pleasure I you know understanding your story understanding for me I’m always really in awe when I hear about true creatives talk about managing and wearing all the business hats. And it seems from the outside, like you’re I mean, let me take it back. It doesn’t seem you are doing it.
00:56:19:11 – 00:56:25:24
Sara Ferrer
You’re you’re doing it and and and and then you continue to reinvent yourself.
00:56:26:01 – 00:56:41:05
Tiffany Chapman
Thank you. I I’m, I’m absolutely flattered that I got asked to do this. And being able to maybe help the next person along is will be that much rewarding. You know, I mean, I everybody needs somebody.
00:56:41:07 – 00:56:44:07
Sara Ferrer
It is true. You get you can walk alone, but you won’t go far.
00:56:44:07 – 00:56:45:12
Serena Reynolds
No. Oh I.
00:56:45:12 – 00:56:46:00
Tiffany Chapman
Like that.
00:56:46:04 – 00:56:48:01
Serena Reynolds
Yes.
00:56:48:03 – 00:57:05:18
Sara Ferrer
And you had mentioned that a little bit earlier which I again want to pull to the forward, forward that a lot of women in particular say I can, I can figure that out by myself, I can do that myself. And from what you said I had received it. As you know, I understood it as it’s not that I don’t need the help.
00:57:05:24 – 00:57:15:11
Sara Ferrer
It’s I’m I’m scared to ask for the help or I feel like I should figure it out. That’s very different than I think I have it all together. I don’t need your help or.
00:57:15:14 – 00:57:23:10
Serena Reynolds
Or. I’m scared of showing my flaws. I’m. I’m scared of how I will be perceived if I’m not. Yeah.
00:57:23:12 – 00:57:28:15
Tiffany Chapman
Yeah, yeah. Like the it like I told you how I why I hit it.
00:57:28:17 – 00:58:01:21
Sara Ferrer
As here we are on your list. And for when Serena came up with the name Fearless and Flawed. We discussed it a lot. It kind of circle back to tell us about the the shit you’ve got done, the amazing career and life experiences. Well, like, tell us the flaws too, because we learned that when we can connect. And I don’t know about you, but most women I talk to, myself included, I don’t learn from just hearing about all the bright and shiny things I learn from when you say, hey, something I did when I was tired, cranky, not thinking straight.
00:58:01:21 – 00:58:19:13
Sara Ferrer
And usually I go, oh yeah, that’s exactly how I behave when I’m tired, cranky and not thinking straight. So it’s it’s a journey essentially, for everybody. Being open and transparent is, I believe, the gift that we try to kind of put out there on fearless and Fly.
00:58:19:15 – 00:58:26:17
Tiffany Chapman
Is you guys. I immediately got emotional. Yeah. Well, I, called sensitive.
00:58:26:19 – 00:58:27:19
Serena Reynolds
00:58:27:21 – 00:58:48:11
Tiffany Chapman
It’s my husband’s little name. You know, I’m just. That’s how I am not going to change. And, I think it just speaks volumes sometimes because, I’ll cry right along with my clients if they’re. They see their picture and they they cry, which is happened a lot because they’re so happy. I’ve never seen themselves like that before.
00:58:48:13 – 00:58:57:22
Tiffany Chapman
I mean, it just honestly, it’s like another piece of my heart is just, like, exploding, you know? Yeah.
00:58:57:23 – 00:59:03:23
Serena Reynolds
The gift I give to other women I love, I love that, and and that’s absolutely magical.
00:59:04:00 – 00:59:12:01
Tiffany Chapman
Thank you, thank you. It is a gift. You’re right. I thank you for using that word. That’s one thing I don’t use a lot, but, yes.
00:59:12:03 – 00:59:29:03
Sara Ferrer
It comes easy. You know, that’s what a gift is like. Doesn’t mean you don’t have to work on it or doesn’t mean you don’t have to, you know, consistently want to continue improving it. But when something just kind of fundamentally comes to you and you have it. But through the journey we’ve seen you’ve work on it. That’s like the best of both worlds, right?
00:59:29:03 – 00:59:39:15
Sara Ferrer
Like something silly. But like, I also need to like, really not even get your feet wet. You do right in you, don’t you? You had first like.
00:59:39:17 – 00:59:42:10
Tiffany Chapman
I like this. I had a full time job.
00:59:42:12 – 00:59:47:23
Serena Reynolds
I did, I went and interned. Yes. Offering time.
00:59:48:03 – 00:59:50:11
Tiffany Chapman
Yeah yeah yeah. Nothing.
00:59:50:13 – 00:59:51:13
Serena Reynolds
That’s.
00:59:51:15 – 01:00:05:19
Tiffany Chapman
Yeah, I did a lot of different things for nothing. But because that’s sometimes you have to start there, you can’t. You want to be humble, you know, have to be humble. And just accept the journey.
01:00:05:21 – 01:00:19:24
Serena Reynolds
So I think me and Sarah both need to go and get some ice packs from next, because we have literally sat here, the whole of this conversation and not agreed passionately to everything. Not wanted to interrupt.
01:00:20:00 – 01:00:25:05
Tiffany Chapman
I talk, I talk a lot when I’m nervous, so I’m sorry if I over spoke, but no.
01:00:25:05 – 01:00:44:18
Sara Ferrer
Do wait. Hold on. Let’s rewind. You’ve you’ve you’ve you’ve you’ve you’ve you’ve you’ve been there to how applies for telling your fabulous story literally on a podcast a it makes our life easier. We we love to be superfans of powerful women who are getting stuff done. And see, I think it makes for a greater story. So this has been I mean, your energy is.
01:00:44:18 – 01:00:59:12
Sara Ferrer
So even when we met for a pre chat, because we meet all of our guests for a little bit beforehand to really intro ourselves. Serena and I have been mentioning you, especially the 50 and fab we. It has been brought up like Tiffany is like she really gets it.
01:00:59:12 – 01:01:01:15
Serena Reynolds
And if I see you.
01:01:01:17 – 01:01:23:19
Sara Ferrer
We see you. We love that. And here’s the beautiful thing we don’t get keep it. So like Tiffany has a fabulous website. We have everything on our on our website. Her bio Tiffany Chapman photography.com. Tiffany let us know is her any Facebook social media, anything you want to shout out to get, you know, people to check you out more besides the website.
01:01:23:23 – 01:01:47:20
Tiffany Chapman
I am on Instagram. So it’s Tiffany Chapman photo on Instagram and I am on there. That’s my portrait genre. I also have a wedding genre. It’s tip Chapman Weddings and those are all my intimate weddings. I only take five a year. So I really, like, really scaled down and, you know, the weddings that I am getting, are people that I know.
01:01:48:00 – 01:02:10:22
Tiffany Chapman
So it’s kind of cool. But that’s it. You know, I do have Facebook. I do have, Instagram, I have LinkedIn two. I’m out there. And I advertise a lot on LinkedIn, too, because obviously I’m the headshot queen. And I really want to continue that genre, because it’s everyone needs a good headshot.
01:02:10:24 – 01:02:12:11
Serena Reynolds
They do?
01:02:12:13 – 01:02:26:13
Tiffany Chapman
Yes. It’s so important. I’ve been really striving to get get people out there to understand that, because if you’re being looked at for potential job or whatever, you know you’re the selfie is not going to work.
01:02:26:15 – 01:02:32:20
Sara Ferrer
Yeah, the car selfie. Let’s dive deeper. More so with seat belt on.
01:02:32:22 – 01:02:40:18
Tiffany Chapman
The car has the best light. Now. Sometimes it’s not 360 light, but it’s just like, oh my God, I don’t even need a filter.
01:02:40:20 – 01:03:00:06
Sara Ferrer
If you are, let me tell you, we do this on Fridays and there’s a good reason why I am. I just want to cartwheel down the streets of Madrid right now, shouting out, shouting out, stop taking your goddamn selfies and be like, Queen is in Boston! Go find her, get your headshot done, look like a pro and feel great.
01:03:00:08 – 01:03:01:02
Sara Ferrer
Yeah.
01:03:01:04 – 01:03:05:09
Tiffany Chapman
Thank you. I appreciate that plug. But.
01:03:05:11 – 01:03:09:05
Sara Ferrer
Serena, did I miss anything before we, before we wrap on up.
01:03:09:07 – 01:03:09:19
Serena Reynolds
Did I miss.
01:03:09:21 – 01:03:10:24
Tiffany Chapman
Anything? So I don’t.
01:03:10:24 – 01:03:11:18
Sara Ferrer
Think I did either.
01:03:11:23 – 01:03:16:00
Serena Reynolds
But my tickets to Boston, I need some I need some headshot.
01:03:16:02 – 01:03:19:18
Tiffany Chapman
Make make a point. Make it. Put it on your wish list.
01:03:19:20 – 01:03:34:06
Sara Ferrer
If any. Thank you again. This has been. Oh. Thank you. And, and we just hope that all the best of luck with your endeavors. And we’ll be in touch. Hopefully, you know, when we do, eventually in the future, we’d love to kind of do a check in.
01:03:34:08 – 01:03:35:00
Tiffany Chapman
We we.
01:03:35:00 – 01:03:42:02
Sara Ferrer
Hope that the boudoir shoots are thriving and everything else that was kind of in your bag of tricks is coming to fruition. So thank you.
01:03:42:04 – 01:03:45:22
Tiffany Chapman
No thank you, Serena. Sarah, I love this. This is such a pleasure.
